Necromancy
The darkest of all the black arts, without a doubt, is Necromancy, the ancient method of communicating with the dead. The art of resurrecting the dead and controlling their spirits takes its name from the Greek words meaning "dead" and "divination."
Necromancy can be divided into two main branches:
Divination by ghosts and divination of corpses. The second method involves the exhumation of corpses and the scouring of graves for the eerie charms that wizards and witches consider necessary for the effective performance of the magical arts.
Necromancy is a universal practice of great antiquity, only the deeply initiated, courageous and resolute magician has any chance of success in such an enterprise, it is always considered to be extremely dangerous, it is believed that the "astral corpse" has an intense desire to live again and could, by absorbing the vital energy of living beings, prolong their life indefinitely, therefore, unless he has taken proper precautions, the magician could be in grave danger.
To evoke the dead, the magician needs to enlist the help of powerful spirits, both for his own protection and to compel the corpse or ghost to submit to his will. An ancient Greek spell calls upon the powers of the mighty Kore, Persephone, Ereshkigal, Adonis, Hermes, and Thoth, to compel the dead. According to a ritual described by the Roman playwright Seneca, the invocation of the dead involves not only a burnt sacrifice but also a blood-soaked aitar.
Scents and aromas must be produced from carefully burned substances for their powerful influences. Elaborate potions prepared include a careful study of the positions of the planets, and especially the Moon and the influence of Saturn.
The site for the operation must be carefully chosen. Once the location has been decided upon, a series of concentric circles of power must be developed on the ground, inscribed with crosses and other symbols, along with the sacred names of God. The circle must be blessed and consecrated, with the magician and his assistant standing in its center, protected from all danger by the sacred names. Then, with the staff in hand, the magician summons the dead to rise, using the names of power.
Other magicians have suggested the need for some attempt at identification between the living and the dead, such as the presence of a portrait and a portion of bread that the ghost will be invited to consume. In his evocation, the magician summons the dead by name and, if successful, must face the terrifying ordeal of a ghost screaming and gibbering with rage at having been forced against its will to return to the realms of the living. Sometimes the dead appear in the forms of furious beasts and will rampage around the circle and threaten to tear the sorcerer to pieces.
When the dead finally decide to submit to the Magician's designs, he often transforms into a naked man who is willing to answer any questions given to him.
After the operation, it is necessary to bid farewell to the dead, who usually disappear in clouds of sulfur. Under no circumstances should the magician leave the protection of the magic circle before this. He or she must also remove all flowers from the area and, after burning them, bury the ashes deep in the ground.
The whole operation is fraught with terrible dangers; the slightest deviation from the rituals could lead to the destruction of the operator and even cause injury to his soul.
